Lunch Lectures

The FRIAS Lunch Lectures Series are dedicated to reflecting on knowledge, science and technology in the broadest sense. Each semester introduces an overarching guiding question, by current FRIAS Fellows and guests from the point of view of their disciplines.

To include international speakers, in Summer Term 2021 the lecture series will take place Tuesdays from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (CEST).

Lectures are usually held in English. After a 30-minute presentation, the audience is invited to take part in a round of questions and audience discussion. The FRIAS Lectures are aimed at all interested parties, participation is free of charge. Pre-registration is required here. Selected sessions will be broadcast live on the FRIAS YouTube channel.

Human Rights in Times of Crisis

On May 4 – following World Press Freedom Day – the public lecture series "Human Rights in Times of Crisis", convened by the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), will kick off. The FRIAS Lectures are thematically based on the opening conference of the Connecticut / Baden-Württemberg Human Rights Research Consortium, which is coordinated on the German side by FRIAS. During eight online sessions, international experts will give insights into different areas of human rights’ research. They will discuss current questions of freedom of religion, expression, and research, as well as address problems of fair monitoring and distribution of data and the human rights situation in different countries. Among the lecturers will be scholars from the disciplines of law, philosophy, and sociology.

“The lecture series aims to examine the importance of human rights in nation states and in various areas of our lives, especially those that are legally anchored. The central question to be discussed is whether these, as universal rights, can be a stabilizing factor in uncertain times and across national borders. I am very pleased that we have the opportunity to discuss this with such exciting speakers who will share their specific points of view and their research with us, "says Silja Vöneky, Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Freiburg and FRIAS Fellow, who initiated the lecture series together with FRIAS Director Prof. Bernd Kortmann.

“The subject of human rights, and how they are currently under pressure in times of multiple political and social crises in different parts of the world, is directly linked to various research projects and initiatives negotiated at the University of Freiburg and FRIAS. As the international and interdisciplinary research college at the University of Freiburg, we look forward to exciting lectures in this transatlantic lecture series, which stands in the tradition of the FRIAS Lunch Lectures. We look forward to lively discussions with a committed university and non-university audience,” says FRIAS Director Bernd Kortmann.
