How does social diversity shape individuals’ linguistic skills and the community’s language?
Much prior research has shown that variability in input can slow down processing and hinder learning. In this talk I will show the benefit of input variability. In particular, I will show that having a larger and more heterogeneous social network allows individuals to develop better linguistic skills. I will also show that larger and more heterogeneous communities create more robust languages. Together, the talk will demonstrate how the diversity of the community shapes language at the individual and community level.
