Millions of people in the world try to learn another dialect of their own language – for example, the regional dialect where they have moved to or the standard dialect of education. But very few have complete success. In fact, many would say that it is more difficult to learn a new dialect than a new language. This talk presents some linguistic, biological and sociolinguistic explanations for this difficulty, focusing on Australian English.
