The topic of the workshop tackles the challenges of strip detectors for large experiments in high energy physics. For the high-luminosity upgrade of the LHC, the radiation hardness of the detectors, especially in the forward region plagued by harsh radiation levels, is a key points as well the reduction of the material budget. For the strip tracker upgrade of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC at CERN a new integration concept is followed. Electronic readout boards are glued on top of the surface of the silicon sensor. Afterwards, the sensors are glued on light-weight support structures made out of carbon.
In the workshop a variety of aspects of building the full detector system will be worked on with an emphasis given on the design and the construction of the forward region of the detector, the so-called end-caps. Invited talks will give an overview of the requirements, difficulties and status of the full detector system prototyping, also deficities or problems should be noted. Technical discussion sessions in working groups will allow to collect and expand the knowledge gained from the prototype studies. The aim is to collect ideas and results for the working group specific topics and and to plan the sharing of tasks for further studies.
