Jürgen Osterhammel receives the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany

Jürgen Osterhammel receives the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany

Historian Jürgen Osterhammel, fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies, was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany. Osterhammel accepted the medal from Head of State Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Schloss Bellevue on 2 October 2019.
 
Jürgen Osterhammel receives the medal for his contributions to the field of global history. Osterhammel has shown that it is worthwhile to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. He has broadened the field of historical studies by a global perspective on the world, enabling a new understanding of historical and current global relations and interactions. He has presented his innovative view of history in award-winning writings to the scientific community and to a broad and international audience.

 
From 1999 until his retirement in March 2018, he was Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Konstanz, and from 2013 until 2018 a member of the FRIAS Scientific Advisory Board. At the invitation of FRIAS, Jürgen Osterhammel has been a Distinguished Fellow since April 2019. Osterhammel works on the research project “Global History: Global Processes and the Dynamics of Regions” together with Stefanie Gänger, Professor of Modern History at the University of Heidelberg, and a group of young scientists. The project is funded by the International Balzan Prize Foundation, based in Milan and Zurich, whose prestigious 2018 Balzan Prize for global history Osterhammel received in 2018.
