FRIAS Lecture Series: Human Rights in Times of Crisis
On May 4 – following the World Press Freedom Day – the public lecture series "Human Rights in Times of Crisis" of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) will kick off. During eight online sessions, international experts will give insights into different areas of human rights’ research. They will discuss current issues concerning freedom of expression, freedom of religion and academic freedom, address the topic of fair data monitoring and distribution, and talk about the human rights situation in different countries. Among the lecturers will be scholars from the disciplines of law, philosophy, and sociology. Speakers include the director of Harvard University’s Carr Center for Human Rights Policy, Prof. Dr. Mathias Risse, and from the Harvard School of Law, law professor Dr. Gerald L. Neuman and lecturer Alicia Ely Yamin, who is also a human rights consultant for the US health organization Partners in Health.
At the opening event of the FRIAS Lecture Series, FRIAS Fellow and law professor Dr. Javier Martinez Torron, of Spain’s Complutense University of Madrid, will address conflicts between freedom of expression and freedom of religion. The digital event series will take place every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. (CET) during the 2021 summer semester. With one exception, the online lectures will be held in English. After the 30-minute presentations, members of the audience are invited to take part in a discussion. The FRIAS Lecture Series is open to everyone who is interested. Attendance is free of charge, but pre-registration is required. Selected lectures will also be live-streamed on the FRIAS YouTube channel.
FRIAS Fellow Prof. Dr. Silja Vöneky, a professor of International Law at the Institute of Public Law at the University of Freiburg, and FRIAS Director Prof. Dr. Bernd Kortmann, are the organizers of the lecture series. The FRIAS Lectures have been topically based on the opening conference of the Connecticut/Baden-Württemberg Human Rights Research Consortium (HRRC). FRIAS coordinates the German side of the partnership.

More information on the FRIAS Lecture Series Program
The University of Freiburg is committed to supporting researchers who are persecuted or threatened in their home countries and who are, thus, no longer able to pursue their research. In 2017, it became a member of the Scholars at Risk Network. As a host institution (https://www.international.uni-freiburg.de/de/scholars/scholars-at-risk-de), also within the framework of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Philipp Schwartz Initiative, the University of Freiburg helps scholars at risk to continue their work in Freiburg. Fellows of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative are supported by FRIAS and the International Office prior and during their stay.
