FRIAS Junior Fellowships 2019/20

Call for applications

The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) offers
Four Junior Fellowships

for Junior Researchers at the University of Freiburg
for the Academic Year 2019/20

Application closed on October 31, 2018

FRIAS supports the complete spectrum of research activities at the University of Freiburg and welcomes applications for the academic year 2019/20 for up to four Junior fellowships from its outstanding junior researchers. The aim of this funding programme is to support young, top level Freiburg scientists at the postdoctoral stage and to include them in international networks. Fellowships will be awarded to individuals with challenging and innovative project proposals of high academic quality.

Junior fellowships are held for ten months from October 1, 2019 to July 31, 2020.

The successful applicants will become FRIAS Junior Fellows with all the corresponding rights and obligations for the requested funding period. They will be released from their teaching duties by the Rectorate. The details of their teaching replacement will be discussed with the relevant faculty and institute and will be supported through FRIAS funding of 16,000 € for 4 contact hours per week per semester. The teaching replacement of junior professors will be realized under slightly deviating conditions: junior professors will receive a 50% teaching release. Faculties/institutes will be supported with 12.000 € for 4 omitted contact hours per week per semester for junior professors before the evaluation and with 18.000 € for 6 omitted contact hours per week per semester for junior professors after the evaluation. Furthermore, Junior Fellows will be granted a research cost contribution of 5,000 €.

Full-time presence at FRIAS is expected of all fellows, i.e. four respectively two (junior professors) full-time working days per week.

Eligible for application are junior researchers after completion of their PhD

a) who hold a temporary state position at the University of Freiburg for the duration of the entire funding period (October 2019 to July 2020), or

b) who finance their own position through third-party funding raised by themselves (again throughout the period from October 2019 until July 2020).

Eligible junior researchers not holding a full time position or those who do not require a full teaching replacement are requested to consult with FRIAS prior to the application.

Junior researchers on other third-party funded positions or with a contract duration not spanning the entire funding period are not eligible within this funding programme. Applications from former FRIAS Junior Fellows are excluded. A retention period of one year applies for re-applications from not selected candidates.

The competition is open to both “start-up” projects (e.g. developing new fields of investigation and/or in preparation for an application for independent external funding) and “completion” projects (e.g. aiming for the successful conclusion of an ongoing research project). Key selection criteria for the selection of the Junior Fellows are:

  • Academic quality and originality of the project proposal and academic qualification of the applicants
  • Impact of FRIAS funding on the academic development of the applicants
