First Call for a Joint Project Group between FRIAS and Nagoya IAR 2016-17

Call is closed.

The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and the Institute for Advanced Research, Nagoya University (Nagoya IAR) welcome applications from excellent researchers from the University of Freiburg and Nagoya University for a joint project group. The joint project group is intended to support the collaboration between research groups from Freiburg and Nagoya around a topic of common interest. The program will support research stays at the partner university, workshops and conferences and activities for junior researchers and advanced students. The support is worth 28.000 Euros + 4.000.000 YEN in total for 24 months.

The aim of this joint call is to strengthen the collaboration between researchers of the two universities and to support highly original joint research combining the strengths of the two universities.

The Institutes

The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) is the international research college of the University of Freiburg. It strives to support high-level research from all disciplines and to strengthen the international visibility of the university. Additional information about the institute can be found at the website www.frias.uni-freiburg.de.

The Institute for Advanced Research, Nagoya University (Nagoya IAR) was established according to the Academic Charter of Nagoya University in 2002 to produce internationally recognized academic research of the highest calibre, and to contribute to society through the research achievements at the Institute. Additional information about the institute can be found at the website www.iar.nagoya-u.ac.jp.

Applicants

The call is open for original research topics in all academic disciplines and domains. An application must comprise at least ….

1 to 3 professors from Freiburg and Nagoya respectively

0 to 3 junior researchers from Freiburg and Nagoya respectively

0 to 3 additional researchers from other research institutions world-wide

One professor each from Freiburg and Nagoya shall be named as joint coordinators of the application.

Expectations

The joint project group is expected to enter into deepened collaboration through research stays, joint conferences, virtual seminars and activities for younger researchers.

Applicants should outline, in which way their research project can contribute to the strategic alliance of the two universities, possibly also beyond the duration of the joint project. The proposed project should add to the international visibility of the two universities and will ideally help to develop and strengthen international networks.

The groups have much freedom to decide on the best way to cooperate, but participating researchers are expected to spend a certain amount of time at the partner university during the project.

Eligibility and selection criteria

Selection criteria are the academic excellence of the applicants, the originality and quality of the project (in terms of topic, perspective and methodology) and the contribution to the strategic alliance between the universities. The call is directed at researchers of the two universities with substantial research experience. Group members from Freiburg and Nagoya need to hold a position at their respective university for the duration of the project.

The duration of proposed projects can be up to 24 months.

The budget will be need-based, taking into account the vastly differing requirements of different disciplines.

The budget can be used for:

  • Travel and costs for research stays at the partner university
  • Joint workshops and conferences
  • Activities for junior researchers
  • Costs for translation, publications, etc. pp. as deemed necessary by the group.

The final budget plan will be determined together with the successful applicant group upon selection; an indication of cost categories and estimated costs per category is sufficient at the time of application. The projects will be jointly administrated by both institutes.

Applications

Applicant groups are invited to submit a joint proposal of maximum 6 pages (incl. references, line-spacing 1.5, font 12 pt) and full CVs for each member of the applicant group, using an  application form. The proposals should be written in English and will be subjected to external international peer review. Naming of up to 5 potential referees is welcome. Final decisions will be made by a joint committee from both institutes, including senior researchers from Japan, Germany as well as from other countries.
Please submit your applications to the contact persons below. This form indicates the information needed for each application.

Timeline

The deadline for applications was July 31 2015.

Decisions about the fellowships will be announced by the end of October 2015

The joint FRIAS-Nagoya IAR project groups should start on  Jan 1 2016.
