Welcoming the New Fellows at FRIAS

On October 21, 2013, the FRIAS community celebrated the beginning of the new academic year 2013/14. The keynote lecture was held by Prof. Dr. Hans Joas (Freiburg / Chicago). Rector Prof. Dr. h.c. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, Vice Rector for Research Prof. Dr. Gunther Neuhaus and the designated FRIAS Directors Prof. Dr. Hermann Grabert and Prof. Dr. Bernd Kortmann welcomed the new fellows who began their research projects at FRIAS this October. Currently 46 fellows from different disciplines and countries work at FRIAS, another 16 External Senior Fellows, mainly from abroad, will come to Freiburg in the following months to spend a research stay at the institute.

FRIAS Fellow Hans Joas held his lecture on “Slavery and Torture in a Global Perspective. Human Rights and the Western Tradition.” Hans Joas has been conducting research as a Permanent Fellow of FRIAS since 2011. In 2000 he was appointed as a visiting professor of Sociology and a faculty member for the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago.
