Carsten Dose, FRIAS managing director since 2008, to leave FRIAS

After ten years of successful work for the institute, FRIAS Managing Director Dr. Carsten Dose is leaving the University of Freiburg

He takes up a position as head of unit for university medicine at the State Ministry for Science, Research and the Arts of the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg. A farewell ceremony was held on April 12 as part of the monthly dinner speech.

Dr. Dose joined the institute at its start in 2008 and contributed in important ways to the establishment of the institute. Together with former FRIAS-director Werner Frick he co-organised the first international conference of University-Based Institutes for Advanced Studies and became the first coordinator of the new UBIAS-network until 2016. He made relevant contributions to the remodelling of the institute from 2012 onwards and successfully applied for EU-funding for the institute’s international fellowship programme. He took the initiative to establish the so-called joint programmes with partner institutes at the Freiburg partner universities of Strasbourg and Nagoya. Within the UBIAS-network, he supported the realization of the first UBIAS-Intercontinental Academia for junior researchers. In an effort to give additional prominence to the concept of the university-based IAS and its relevance to the German research landscape he, together with FRIAS-director Bernd Kortmann organised the first national conference on this topic in Berlin in 2016. Over the last 15 months, he was engaged with the successful bid for a grant from the German Science Ministry to establish an Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Ghana in Accra.

FRIAS director Bernd Kortmann: “The FRIAS-directorate wishes to wholeheartedly thank Carsten Dose for his successful work here at FRIAS. We wish him all the best and much success for his new position at the ministry.”
