It is surely one of mankind oldest dreams: Cause some action by only thinking about it. And this dream is not quite satisfied by the power of the quill. Nowadays, news outlets and startup companies give the impression that this dream has become reality by substantial progress in so called human-machine interfaces - coming non-invasive or invasive, desired or needed. This talk will both give an introduction into the technology to to tap into the brain, but more importantly into the reality of research and the challenges to be overcome before we are even close to some real world applications.
My talk from the inside of research will cast reasonable doubt that the goal set forth by entertainment industry will be achieved soon and not in the way as expected.
Still, it is high time to start open discussions whether or not fusing man and machine is a desirable goal and where we shouldn’t do what we might be able to...
