Opposing scientific mainstream we have developed the moss Physcomitrella patens as a model system for basic biology as well as for biotechnology at a world-wide scale. Some of the milestones from this work will be highlighted for those colleagues familiar with the life sciences. However, the main intention of my talk is to explain the concept of a “model system” or a “flagship model” in modern biology to those colleagues not familiar with the life sciences. If everything works out well, we will end up with a lively discussion ranging from different publication strategies in the sciences and the humanities to the position of humans in evolution.
