The quantum vacuum — convenient fiction or physical reality?
Quantum mechanics predicts that even the emptiest region of space contains a rich structure, but cannot be directly observed. Its existence is usually inferred via indirect methods, which often admit more than one interpretation. In this talk I will outline the scientific and philosophical issues surrounding the quantum vacuum, and give an overview of recent works which claim to prove its ‘reality’.
