This presentation will propose an interdisciplinary methodological approach of the current FRIAS project Faust I in prints and book objects (Germany, England, France, 1816-1925) by combining comparative literature, reception and reading theories as well as book studies. Structured around the various ways the title may be understood, broaching tricky questions as to how we interpret printed objects and read with images, How Faust Travels with Images will stress the idea of circulation, address the inadequacy and invasiveness of the term illustration, and discuss how images shape myths. It will also explain the choice of the three countries and the period envisaged.
