Writing Illiberalism into the History of the American Century
When Donald Trump ascended to the White House scholars and commentators found the sources of his politics among autocratic regimes in far-flung parts of the world from Hungary to Brazil. This project instead seeks to root the sources for Trump’s illiberal ideas and governance within the United States itself by tracing out earlier currents of illiberalism in the American past.
