'Bees for Peace’: Religion, Resilience, and the Multispecies City
This lecture contributes to the FRIAS focus on ‘multidisciplinary research on resilience’ in the environmental humanities. The environmental humanities are concerned with the socio-cultural dimension of human interrelationships with the more-than-human world. Examining fundamental questions of meaning, value, and purpose, and how these are framed, communicated, reinforced and contested, environmental humanities research discloses the attitudes and assumptions that underlie the ways in which humans shape their environs and perceive and interact with nonhuman others. The research project that I am currently initiating at FRIAS is weighted towards environmental religious and cultural studies, and will focus on faith-based advocacy for, and engagement in, urban biodiversity conservation in the global context of declining wildlife populations, diminishing genetic diversity, escalating species extinction, and climate disruption. In this talk I will introduce my first case study: the Cologne-based multi-faith urban pollinator project, ‘Bees for Peace’ (https://www.beesforpeace.org/).
