Book Launch "Vor dem großen Krieg. Europa 1598-1618" / Before the long war. Europe 1598-1618

After decades of violent denominational, dynastic and political conflicts, Europe seemed to have found an era of peaceful balance with the pax hispanica towards the end of the 16th century. All the more fatal was the outbreak of the longest war in modern times in 1618.
In this book, eminent Early Modern historian Ronald G. Asch designs a great panorama of Europe on the eve of the Thirty Years' War. With an eye for the big picture, he rolls out the reasons for the outbreak of the war and draws a comparative cross-section that takes into account the Habsburg Empire as well as Spain, England and France, but also includes the Ottoman Empire and thus makes clear the different political and cultural developments in the major European powers.
