Addressing sustainability challenges and re-building urban-rural relations through Alternative Food Networks
This talk introduces and discusses Alternative Food Networks (AFNs) as a possible answer to two pressing challenges in the Anthropocene: (1) the current agri-food system as a significant driver of global environmental change and (2) the increasing dis-connect of urban centres from their rural hinterlands. In my research I aim to examine how existing, developing, or desired food systems alternatives are able to comprehensively address sustainability challenges and re-build urban-rural relations, particularly focussing on potentials of alternative economic practices. The talk will mainly focus on introducing the two main challenges as well as the concept of AFNs. I will close with presenting some preliminary empirical findings from the Freiburg region.
