Artificial Intelligence: A Novel Account of a Novel Technology

Christoph Durt will present the main line of argument of his chapter “Artificial Intelligence and Its Integration into the Lifeworld.” The chapter is part of the Cambridge Handbook of Responsible Artificial Intelligence, which will be launched at the FRIAS two days later. Christoph Durt contends that artificial intelligence is commonly misconceived as analogous to human intelligence, and AI systems as analogous to human beings. He shows how the Turing Test misrepresents the relation between AI and humans, and that it overlooks the crucial roles of data and the shared world we live in. AI’s relations to humans, data, and the world are very particular, which also distinguishes AI from earlier technologies. Seeing these relations is necessary to assess the novel technology and to find responsible ways of creating and using it.
