The Practice of Astronomy in Medieval Europe, 1000-1300

Latin manuscripts written during the eleventh to thirteenth century contain a wealth of unexplored texts and tables documenting the development of mathematical astronomy in Europe during the High Middle Ages. In this talk, I introduce the overall subject and provide some examples of what neglected manuscript sources can reveal to us about the ways in which Latin Europeans practiced the ‘science of the stars’ in the twin areas of computation and observation.
