In connection with my FRIAS project I have carried out field work in Thailand from December 2014 – February 2015. This field work was highly influenced by the current political circumstances. Since the latest military coup in May 2014, Thailand has experienced an increased oppression of freedom of speech in particular when the monarchy is concerned. Accordingly many of my interview partners were not feeling safe to freely express their opinions about funeral rituals which are traditionally associated with the monarchy. Therefore, I shifted my fieldwork to focus on archival sources instead. In this colloquium I would like to discuss in which direction this shift will lead my research.
