This essay will display how the intellects of both scholars and their audiences are censored. Besides Western thinkers, particular attention will be paid to Ali Shari‘ati, one of the most influential modern intellectuals of Iran and his presentation of an Islamic tradition. This article will analyze the material and political conditions that help to censor both what scholars can say and what audiences can hear.
