Robinson Crusoe, Iconological Analysis, and Genre: A Missed Opportunity
To date, and surprisingly, a comprehensive and systematic bibliography of editions of Daniel Defoe’s classic, Robinson Crusoe (1719), has not been produced. Likewise, there is no systematic account of the ways in which book illustrations accompanying editions of the work mediate the text, how they reflect their makers’ knowledge of other illustrators’ productions, and how these illustrations reflect genre-specific aspects of the Robinsonade. The earliest phase of illustrated editions, from 1719 to 1722, is particularly poorly understood. It is, therefore, the aim of this paper to contextualize the role and significance of four editions from this period. The focus will be on a hitherto neglected, illustrated edition of the first illustrated Dutch translation, published in 1720-1721, and the importance of its illustrative apparatus within transnational print culture.
