Beyond Vision Alone: Re-sensing the Image in Contemporary Art

In this talk I present two case studies from my current research project, that addresses the politics of the image within contemporary situations of conflict and war, and primarily within the Israeli-Palestinian socio-cultural context. The failure of images to effectively participate in social struggles is often ascribed in scholarship to modern, disembodied ways of looking. Following this line of thought, I examine the way in which both "Archive" (an acclaimed dance performance by Arkadi Zaides) and "Shit instead of Blood" (a highly criticized video work by Natali Cohen Vaxberg) expose taken-for-granted relationships between images and their viewers, and open up possibilities for reflexive and more engaged ways of looking. I address these cases as "theoretical objects" that deploy their artistic medium in order to articulate thought, and make an argument for their position as cultural agents that, by pulling images outside of their comfort zone, expose the ideals, values, presuppositions and fears that frame one's way of seeing.
