Cross-Border Corruption, Regulation and Institutions
How can we curb cross-border corruption in a situation where countries have different institutional endowments and regulatory quality? Are there existing institutional and regulatory complementarities between countries that society can take advantage of in deterring cross-border corrupt transactions? The study explores these questions using a novel dataset of reported cases of cross-border corruption, the collection of which was made possible with the enforcement of the 1997 OECD Foreign Bribery Convention. More specifically, it provides an economic analysis of the role played by strong whistleblower protection laws and well developed financial markets in at least one country which is party to the bribe.
