The Meme is the Message: Down the Clickhole of "Cultural Marxism" with the Alt-Right
In this session, I’ll first outline a brief genealogy of the alt-right’s notion of "Cultural Marxism", a concept that unites half-truths about the history of Marxist Critical Theory with outlandish conspiracy theories about the Frankfurt School’s plot to overthrow Western civilisation. In a second step, I pursue some ramifications of "Cultural Marxism" in the online and social media environments in which it has flourished. I’ll conclude by attempting to draw out some of the cultural logics of the alt-right’s strategic invocation of Critical Theory.
