Michelangelo is one of the world's most renowned artists and can, without a doubt, be considered one of the greatest artists of all time. But why?
In 2011, as part of their science fiction series S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel Comics merchandised Michelangelo as a superhero with supernatural powers. Hans W. Hubert's detailed investigation focuses on the formation of the image of Michelangelo as an exceptional and “heroic” artist. These notions are part of a deep rooted history and can be traced back to the reception of “the divine” in the sixteenth century. Beginning with the conception of such ideas within Michelangelo's very own lifetime, and concluding with how these ideas persistently influence modern day perceptions, Hans W. Hubert will explore the presentation of Michelangelo as a hero.
