Capitalism and Violence: A Short History
This talk explores the connections between the unfolding of capitalism and extra-economic coercion and violence. Many of the stories we tell about capitalism correctly focus on the importance of contracts and market based transactions. Yet historically, enormous degrees of violence have gone hand in hand with the expansion of capitalism. The enslavement of millions of people in the Americas is one example. The talk will sketch this history, and suggest some reasons for why extra-economic coercion and violence remained central to the unfolding of capitalism.
