Prof. Dr. Ralf von den Hoff is Professor of Cassical Archaeology at the University of Freiburg. In 1992, he received his PhD from Bonn University. In 1999/2000 he was Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Classics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, as a fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation. Since 2012 he has been speaker of the Collaborative Research Center 948 ‘Heroes, Herizations, Heroisms’, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Between 2012 and 2014 he was FRIAS Research Fellow at the School of History. In 2018/19 he was member of the FRIAS Project Group ‘SurFace. Image-Artifact-Relations’. In 2018/19 and 2020 he was fellow at the Morphomata International Center for Advanced Studies, University of Cologne. He is member of the Frankreichzentrum of Freiburg University, of the Collegium Beatus Rhenanus and of the German Archaeological Institute. Since 2021 has been member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. His research is focussing on Greek sculpture, ancient portraits and the representation of rulers as well as on the iconology and visual culture of the ancient Greek and Roman world.

Ralf von den Hoff served as Dean of Studies and as Vice Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of Freiburg University from 2006 until 2012. Between 2009 and 2019, he was a member of the Executice Commitee of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). Between 2012 and 2020, he was a member of the DFG Review Board 'Ancient Cultures', and between 2013 and 2020 a member of the Scientific Commission of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. From 2015 until 2018 he served as a member of the FRIAS Steering Commitee. He is a co-editor of the online journal ‘Göttinger Forum für Altertumswissenschaft’ (GFA) and a member of the Editorial Board of the’Bulletin de Correspondance Hellénique’ and of the Scientific Advisory Board of the’Istanbuler Mitteilungen’ and the ‘Römische Mitteilungen’, published by the German Archaeological Institute.

In October 2022, Ralf von den Hoff was appointed Executive Director of FRIAS.
