Genetic Studies of Vulnerable Populations: Current Debates about Ethical and Societal Challenges

In the past months, scientific journals have published a number of editorials, comments, letters and articles regarding ethical and societal implications of genetic data collected from marginalized and vulnerable populations. Among those populations are indigenous communities in the Americas, Uighurs in China, Roma in Europe, and San in Africa. Under debate is whether ethical procedures have been followed appropriately when data was collected and later shared; whether privacy can be guaranteed for members of those populations; and how benefits can be shared equally. In this lecture, I will briefly summarize this development, the main arguments in the debate, and proposals of those who call for action.

The event takes place via Zoom. All current information about the event series and participation will be posted at https://www.frias.uni-freiburg.de/en/events/lunch-lectures
