Trust in medical AI: conceptual considerations and stakeholders’ attitudes
Trust constitutes a fundamental strategy to deal with risks and uncertainty in complex societies. In line with the vast literature stressing the importance of trust in doctor-patient relationships, trust is therefore regularly suggested as a way of dealing with the risks of medical AI. Yet, there is substantial disagreement how to conceptualize such trust. In this lunch lecture, I provide a brief overview of the current literature and suggest a new multi-dimensional model of trust suited for the context of medical AI. I relate it to recent empirical findings investigating the attitudes of relevant stakeholders, focusing on questions of explainability, and conclude with a suggestion how to move forward.
