Topic
The course addresses different ways to work with ELAN corpora using R and Python. With R, the focus is on parsing, summarizing and visualizing data, while the Python portion concentrates on tier manipulation. The goal is to introduce methods for automatizing and systematizing corpus creation, maintenance and annotation tasks. The teaching proceeds through examples that present different research workflows taking advantage of the current tools. All materials and code will be fully available for testing on the participants’ computers, and participants are encouraged to bring their own ELAN materials to the class.
The targeted audience are advanced MA students, PhD students, or other colleagues interested in corpus linguistics, ideally with existing basic knowledge in corpus building and quantitative methods.
Organisers
The workshop is organized by Michael Rießler (Freiburg, Bielefeld) and Niko Partanen (Freiburg, Paris) and with financial and organisational support from FRIAS and the Hermann Paul School of Linguistics.
