The Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies (FRIAS) will be hosting the workshop “Perceptual linguistic salience: Modelling causes and consequences” on October 16-18, 2014. The workshop, which is being organised by Alice Blumenthal-Dramé, Adriana Hanulíková and Bernd Kortmann as Director of FRIAS, aims to bring together researchers from various fields of linguistics (psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics, linguistic typology) to explore the notion of perceptual salience and its explanatory potential for the domains of language cognition, variation and change. Research topics include but are not limited to:

1)    Grasping the phenomenon

- How can the perceptual salience of linguistic forms and variants be operationalised?

-  What are relevant predictors of salience?

-  Are there different kinds of perceptual salience, and how do they interact?

2)    Examining and modelling the effects of perceptual salience on language processing and representation

- What types of cognitive processes underlie the differential treatment of salient linguistic percepts, and how can this be modelled in terms of psycholinguistic models?

- Are salient linguistic percepts particularly prone to entrenchment, or should they rather be seen as resulting from high levels of entrenchment?

- What is the relationship between perceptual salience and frequency?

3)    Exploring the relationship between perceptual salience and language variation and change

-  What is the role of perceptual salience in different types of language change?

- What is the relationship between perceptual salience and typological markedness?

- To what extent are predictors of salience language- or dialect-specific?

- How does the salience of linguistic items impact on their trajectory in situations of language contact?

- What is the relationship between perceptual salience, explicit awareness and stigmatisation?

Confirmed guest speakers include Harald Baayen (Tübingen), James Blevins (Cambridge), Ewa Dabrowska (Newcastle), Dagmar S. Divjak (Sheffield), T. Florian Jaeger (Rochester, NY), Paul Kerswill (York), Lynne Nygaard (Emory U) and Hans-Joerg Schmid (Munich).
