Scholars of popular culture are sometimes not taken entirely seriously because they devote a lot of time to Madonna, Playboy, and similarly questionable subjects. Focusing on Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose election to Governor of California in 2003 many Europeans still cannot understand, the talk will demonstrate cultural studies’ potential to yield insights into collective value systems and political processes. Among other things, the lecture will suggest that anybody who wants to comprehend Schwarzenegger’s tremendous success with the Californian electorate must equally well understand this state’s elections laws and what today forgotten films such as Twins (1988) or Kindergarten Cop (1990) did for the actor’s star persona.
