Avant-garde or modernism: what remains of the avant-garde project?

A vast number of conceptions of the literary and artistic evolution of the 20^th century agree that while the notion of avant-garde is important, it has definitely been historicized. This is a consequence not only of the questions raised about post-modernity, but also of a different conception of time prevailing at the beginning of the 21^st century. While modernity was characterised by a distancing from the past and a permanent projection into the future, the never-ending acceleration of this process produced a presentism characterised by simultaneity that became less and less dependent on the traditional temporal dimension of the so-called project of modernity. – In this context, the avant-garde occupies a singular and precarious position. Etymologically, it is a notion specifically and paradoxically situated in time and space. In order to outline the possibilities of a theory of the avant-garde beyond the alternative of failure and relativisation, the conference will examine questions and problems resulting from the current location of the avant-garde such as: what are the possibilities of “leading art back into life” (Peter Bürger) nowadays and in the era of the historical avant-garde; is the project of the avant-garde really dead, as Eric Hobsbawm states, or is there an “afterlife” of the avant-garde as a “living dead”, as Paul Mann postulates; what are the theoretical consequences of the transfer of the avant-garde to South America (Hans-Ulrich Gumbrecht); is there a new relationship between avant-garde and arrière-garde (William Marx) one century after the birth of the avant-garde?
