Difference and Identity, Subjectivity and Nature: The Dialogue between Schelling and Hegel

How do all things hang together, while at the same time being distinct from one another? How can seemingly opposed concepts such as freedom and necessity, spirit and nature, or subject and object be thought of as forming one unity? These are the questions addressed in the dialogue between the two idealist philosophers F.W.J. Schelling and G.W.F. Hegel, spanning almost 50 years, and one of the most influential debates in the history of philosophy. The talk will present the outline of a research project reconstructing this dialogue, thereby focusing on the concepts of identity and difference. In the talk, I will unfold the historical background of the dispute between the two thinkers, reconstruct the essential steps of their dialogue, and discuss some key concepts involved in the debate, such as system, principle, identity, and difference. Finally, the talk will show how these basic concepts affect debates on the relation between subjectivity and nature in German Idealism, also addressing the contemporary relevance of such debates.
