FRESCO is the Freiburg Research Collaboration Program via which the University of Freiburg intends to establish long lasting, sustainable links between excellent researchers from Freiburg and high-ranking national and international researchers to substantially strengthen and develop existing profile and emerging fields and thereby enhance the University of Freiburg’s overall research profile.

FRESCO offers the opportunity to the Freiburg faculty of nominating top international researchers as external fellows for an extended period. The programme is designed to promote the establishment of new long-term collaborations or the strengthening of existing collaborations by supporting the exchange of expertise and technologies between excellent researchers.

FRESCO is managed by the university’s international research college FRIAS, the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies.

 

The programme is aimed at:

  • Excellent national and international scientists who want to collaborate with Freiburg researchers of existing profile and emerging fields (https://uni-freiburg.de/research/research-profile/)  by spending up to a maximum of 5 months over a period of 2.5 subsequent years in Freiburg.
  • Junior researchers (completed PhD plus one to six years of post-doctoral experience at the time of the nomination deadline) or
  • Senior researcher (completed PhD plus a minimum of six years of post-doctoral experience or a tenured professorship or equivalent permanent position at the time of the nomination deadline) 

 

Conditions

  • Successful nominees will become FRIAS fellows with all the corresponding rights and obligations for the requested funding period.
  • FRIAS covers the costs for accommodation (up to 1500 €/month) and offers an additional living allowance of 1.500 €/month to cover extra costs resulting from the fellowship stay in Freiburg.
  • All fellows will have at their disposal a travel allowance to cover the costs of the inbound and outbound journeys up to a maximum of two round trips per year.
  • The Institute provides its fellows with modern office space and an up-to-date infrastructure. Accommodation is available through the university guest house and additional centrally located apartments. Fellows have full access to all library services from one of the leading German university libraries. Special attention is given to fellows who plan to come to Freiburg together with their families.
  • FRIAS makes every effort to provide tailor-made solutions with regard to suitable accommodation, child care and educational facilities.

 

Nomination requirements

NOTE: It is strongly recommended that researchers interested in nominating a candidate for a FRESCO Fellowship contact the FRIAS Executive Director Prof. Dr. Ralf von den Hoff (, 0761/203-97317), the Managing Director Dr. Annette Doll (annette.doll@frias.uni-freiburg.de, -97350) or Gabriel Hugoniot (gabriel.hugoniot@frias.uni-freiburg.de, -97351) in advance to preparing a nomination.

 

Please submit the following documents in one single assembled PDF file to Dr. Katrin Brandt (katrin.brandt@frias.uni-freiburg.de):

  1. Nomination letter of host at Freiburg (max. 2 pages). This letter should include information on:
    • Research field, topic, assignment to a profile or emerging field (https://uni-freiburg.de/research/research-profile/) and short abstract of the planned collaboration.
    • Academic excellence of the nominee.
    • Added value of conducting research at the University of Freiburg (both for the nominee and the host/profile or emerging field).
  2. Commitment letter of the nominee (max. 2 pages, including envisaged schedule of fellowship)
  3. CV and publication list of the nominee (max. 2 pages, most important publications)

 

Formatting: font Arial, 11 pt, line spacing 1.5, all margins 2.5 cm.

 

The FRESCO nomination has to be submitted by November 15, 2022; 24.00 h CET.

 

Selection procedure

The selection will be made by the international FRIAS Scientific Advisory Board taking into account the following all-important selection criteria:

  • Academic excellence of the nominee
  • The nominee’s fit to the relevant profile or emerging field (in consultation with the speakers of the relevant profile or emerging field).
