The New FRIAS Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope FEI Quanta 250 FEG
A new Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope, the FEI Quanta 250 FEG has been installed in the rooms of the FMF electron microscopy and “Oberflächen/Grenzflächen” group. The high-performance instrument is equipped with three vacuum modes (high vacuum, low vacuum and ESEM) to accommodate the widest range of samples. Additionally an analytical EDX system is connected to the machine. The field emission gun (FEG) system provides high resolution, and a good picture quality even at low acceleration voltages. This is important for beam sensitive samples like polymers. As an enviromental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) it allows meaurements in gaseous environment in the specimen chamber, especially in water vapor enviroments up to pressures > 1000 Pa. At temperatures below 5°C even the condensation of liquid water is possible.
