Microfluidic Systems for Chemical Analysis
State-of-the-art microfluidics allows accurate handling of liquid volumes in the nl to μl range, in miniaturized systems in which sensing elements to monitor chemical processes on-line can be integrated. Three examples of such systems will be discussed: i) highly ordered silicon micro and nano structures for analytical separations; ii) a microfluidic probe which allows nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry on sub-microliter sample volumes, e.g. of human body fluids or of microreactor products on-line, and iii) electrowetting-based microfluidic devices which mix 1 μl liquid droplets in less than 100 ms, and its application in studies of enzyme kinetics using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.
