Stem cell engineering of neural stem cells and differentiated neurons
Our studies focus on interactions between neural stem cells or neurons and their microenvironment. We report a conjugated polymer that can control growth factor presentation and thus rat neural stem cell state in vitro. In this context we are also exploring conjugated polymers for controlled small molecule release. Moreover, we are developing cholinergic neural differentiation, highly related to Alzheimer’s disease, from induced pluripotent stem cells in 2D and 3D hydrogel cultures. In hydrogel cultures we have observed upregulation of signaling pathways related to mechanotransduction and neuroprotection. We are currently establishing new iPS lines derived from Alzheimer’s patients and controls.
