Engineered microstructures and new materials for high resolution, high frequency nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are among the most important techniques for chemical/biochemical analysis and clinical diagnoses, respectively. Over the past decade there have been significant improvements in limits-of-detection, as well as spectral and spatial resolution. Major contributing factors include new fabrication techniques for microsensors and the integration of microfluidics devices and NMR detectors. For high frequency human MRI, new materials can be used to counteract intrinsic problems of high power deposition in the body, and variable contrast across images. The talk will discuss where future collaborations between materials groups and magnetic resonance researchers might lead.
