The latest tricks in ROMP chain end functionalization

Our group has been developing new methods for end-functionalizing ring opening metathesis polymers (ROMP). The general problem in end-functionalizing living ROM polymers arises out of the high functional group tolerance of the propagating ruthenium alkylidene complexes. Despite these challenges, a number of synthetic end-functionalization procedures have been developed over the last decade.1 End-functional groups that can be routinely introduced to ROMP polymers include alcohols, aldehydes, carboxylic acids, thiols and amines.2 This presentation will give an overview over how to synthesize such end-functional ROMP polymers. Finally, we will present some "kinetic tricks" that simplify the synthesis of well-defined bis-end functional (homo-telechelic) ROMP polymers.
