FRIAS-Projekt

Mobile eye-tracking studies and the interactive construction of visible and imagined spaces

The project investigates the interactive construction of visible and imagined spaces in face-to-face interaction. A particular focus is placed on the role of gaze as a resource to coordinate courses of action, to establish joint attention, and to provide for online-updates of the continuously changing (shared) perceptual ground. Methodologically situated within the framework of conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, and research on multimodality, the research design goes beyond present studies on speech, gaze, and gesture by the use of mobile eye-tracking technology in naturally occurring face-to-face interaction. Instead of heavy, head-mounted eye-trackers, participants wear light eye-tracking glasses that neither restrict head movements nor the mobility of the body in general. This research design allows for the first time to study the role of gaze in emergent interaction in an extremely fine-grained way.
