CV

I studied Semiotics and Communication Studies at the University of Bologna and spent one year at the University of California, Los Angeles, studying Linguistics and Conversation Analysis. I then moved to Nijmegen for my Ph.D. to work in the Multimodal Interaction Project within the Language and Cognition group of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. My dissertation project was on “The organization of gaze behaviour in face-to-face interaction”. I am currently working as a post-doctoral researcher in the department of Developmental and Comparative Psychology at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. My current research focuses mainly on the following topics: humans and apes understanding of property, joint attention in young infants, gestural communication in great apes and visible behaviour in humans (in particular gaze behaviour).

FRIAS-Projekt

Communicating without words: The design and recognition of first actions in human infants and non-human primates
In this project I address four different aspects of first actions design and delivery in the communication of human infants and non-human primates (i.e.,orang-utangs, bonobos, and chimpanzees):
1) What semiotic resources are mobilized to produce signals recognizable as first actions by recipients?
2) In what ways are such actions designed for specific addressees?
3) To what extent can these actions be seen as making response conditionally relevant, as is the case for
verbal first actions in humans? Is lack of response accountable?
4) What does language add to this basic infrastructure?
