S100A1 in heart and vascular diseases: From Molecule to Therapy
The remarkable advances in our understanding of the molecular and biochemical bases for cardiac and vascular diseases have generated understandable enthusiasm for the development of targeted therapies. This talk will highlight and discuss key steps of a translational strategy towards new treatments of heart failure and vascular ischemic diseases. Originating from clinical molecular pathologies, our approach systematically exploits the unique therapeutic profile of the EF-hand calcium sensor protein S100A1, which emanates from pleiotropic molecular functions in cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells. Major objectives of this presentation are therefore to understand a) S100A1's role and therapeutic potential in cardiovascular biology and disease, and b) inherent principles for efficient design of target-tailored experimental therapies.
