Marie S. Curie FCFP fellowships offer the following conditions:
1. Living allowance
A formal employment contract with the University of Freiburg valid for the duration of the fellowship is drawn up for each individual participant in the Marie S. Curie FCFP. By signing an employment contract with the University of Freiburg, all fellows are covered by national insurance (unemployment, pension, health and accident insurance). The health insurance is comprehensive and does not discriminate against individuals with pre-existing health conditions, whilst the pension insurance scheme can be transferred to many countries within Europe and the unemployment insurance can be claimed in the event that no source of employment can be found immediately after the fellowship comes to an end.
In accordance with pay grade E13, an experienced researcher in the junior scheme shall receive approximately 54.000 € per year pre-tax (exact amount depending on personal qualifications).
Within the Marie S. Curie FCFP FRIAS offers two possible schemes for the remuneration of senior fellows:
1. Senior Fellowships – Guest Professor/Salary compensation to home university
a) Employment as guest professor on a regular employment contract with all social security benefits in Germany.
Fellows in the senior scheme are typically employed as guest professors owing to their higher level of academic expertise. The guest professorship is a formal employment contract with the University of Freiburg valid for the duration of the fellowship. By signing an employment contract with the University of Freiburg, all fellows are covered by national insurance (unemployment, pension, health and accident insurance). The health insurance is comprehensive and does not discriminate against individuals with pre-existing health conditions, whilst the pension insurance scheme can be transferred to many countries within Europe and the unemployment insurance can be claimed in the event that no source of employment can be found immediately after the fellowship comes to an end. Salary is based on the official pay scale table for public service (public servants), professorial level W3 (approximately 80.000 € per year pre-tax, personal contributions to social security will also be deducted).
However, for senior fellows, besides this above mentioned option, two additional arrangements for the remuneration are feasible. These arrangements are based on the understanding, that in the case of senior researchers from highly competitive international universities, who already hold a well-endowed senior academic position, mobility (in most cases) is best supported if employment and social security arrangements are not interrupted at their home university:
b) Employment with home university continues, FRIAS transfers the costs of employment to the home institution, which has to provide evidence of the employment costs. The home university needs to provide evidence of comprehensive social security coverage for the duration of the fellowship. FRIAS pays mobility allowance to cover extra costs of Freiburg stay.
c) A mix of both funding strategies in case the home university continues to pay part but not all of the salary (often through a sabbatical). The researcher then gets an additional contract as guest professor. Social security arrangements rest with the original contract.
2. Senior Fellowships – On Paid Leave
Senior fellows who stay on paid leave of absence from their home institution during the time of the fellowship, will be provided a single-person apartment in Freiburg and an additional living allowance of 1.000 €/month to cover extra costs resulting from the fellowship stay in Freiburg.
There is an in-depth individual clarification of all these issues with successful applicants for senior fellowships. The question of possible financial contributions by the home institution is raised where appropriate (e.g. if the regular salary of the successful applicant is higher than the salary offered under this scheme or if a paid leave of absence (sabbatical) covers part of the fellowship period). However, the selection process is conducted completely without consideration of financial issues.
2. Mobility allowance:
Mobility allowance covers:
- Travel expenses (inbound, outbound, on the basis of state travel regulations, i. e. public transport, economy class flight).
- For uninterrupted research stays of seven months or longer one extra homeward journey and part of the removal costs (on the basis of state regulations for removal expenditures, max. 1.500 Euro) can be refunded.
- An additional contribution to accommodation in Freiburg may be part of the fellowship package (only in the “senior scheme - on paid leave”).
3. Research cost contribution:
A research cost contribution of up to 1.050 € per month (experimental sciences) or 450 € per month (social and theoretical sciences) can be requested. The research cost contribution in the experimental sciences can be spent for e. g. consumables such as glassware, plastic goods and pipettes, chemicals, organic materials, analytics, participation in conferences (travel costs, conference fees), organization of workshops linked to the research topic of the fellow, literature and publication costs. The research cost contribution for social and theoretical sciences comprises e. g. literature, participation in conferences (travel costs, conference fees), organization of workshops linked to the research topic of the fellow, costs for empirical research, visits to archives and publication costs.
Research costs do not include any personnel costs, e.g. for PhD students or technical staff assisting the researcher, and cannot be used to buy equipment for the host organisation.
4. Child benefits in Germany
In general, taxpaying expatriate residents of Germany are eligible for Kindergeld if they have children. This is an allowance (also called a Child Benefit) from the German government to help defray some of the cost of raising children. You get it as a rule until the children turn 18, though it can continue until they are 25 if they are still in school or meet other requirements for an extension. The tax-free benefit is €190 per month for each of the first two children, €196 for the third child and €221 for each subsequent one. Whether an international researcher qualifies for the receipt of Kindergeld needs to be clarified on an individual basis upon the start of the employment.
