Selfassembly
Selfassembly refers to a spontaneous process of the emergence of structures by assembly of units. In this talk I’ll give some examples of selfassembly, show the importance of this process in nature (e.g. crystal growth, the formation of spiral galaxies) and biology (formation of cell membranes, folding of proteins) and discuss possibilities and achievements of selfassembly in technology. Of particular interest is the selfassembly of amphiphilic molecules in relation of nano- and microparticles which chemical and geometrical anisotropy: Particles with hydrophobic patches assemble in aqueous suspensions by avoiding contact of these patches with water.
