According to embodied cognition theory, affective processing could be grounded in more fundamental sensory representations. During my presentation, this principle will be illustrated by three examples showing a relation between tonal pitch and affective meaning. The first example concerns the mimicking of positive and negative affective facial expressions while hearing of sinus tones of different tonal height. The second example concerns categorization of the tonal height (as being high or low) of heard vocal expressions of positive and negative emotions. The third example concerns the categorization of affective meaning of vocal expressions of emotions (as positive or negative) of different tonal height. All examples demonstrate a pitch-affect congruence effect, with better performance in congruent conditions (high-pitch/positive-affect; low-pitch/negative-affect combinations) than incongruent conditions (low-pitch/positive-affect; high-pitch/negative-affect combinations). Results are discussed in light of pertaining theories of embodied cognition.
