Interdisciplinary conference "Catastrophes"

“Catastrophes”. 2^nd Interdisciplinary FRIAS Symposium

From 4th to 6th May 2011, the 2^nd Interdisciplinary FRIAS Symposium is going to examine "Katastrophen/Catastrophes". Having been planned for a long time, recent events have made the subject matter particularly explosive. A wide interdisciplinary dialog between the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences is going to cover the four sections, which follow the ideal type of catastrophic event processes, from the initial indicators through to the processing and dealing with the catastrophe (prediction, collapse, reorganization, lessons from the crisis). The range of conference topics will be presented in 17 contributions from all areas of research, from biblical apocalypse and natural disasters, neurological crises through to collapsing financial markets.
The symposium will be opened with a lecture by the renowned mathematician, Prof. Dr. Florin Diacu on the subject of: “Before Tragedy Strikes: The Quest to Predict Megadisasters“ (Mi, 4th May 2011, 6.15p.m.).
The conference is open to the public. In addition to members of Universität Freiburg, the interested public is invited to attend. The Symposium takes place from 4th to 6th May 2011, at Aula, Kollegiengebäude I, Universität Freiburg, Platz der Universität. The conference languages are English and German, all lectures will be translated simultaneously. The conference will be rounded off with a “Long Night of Disaster Movies” in collaboration with Kommunales Kino (Friday, 6th May 2011, 7.30p.m.)
