Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. There is worldwide political consensus that the greenhouse effect is largely a result of human activities and that it is necessary to take action against this phenomenon over the next decades. In the mobility and transport sector, it will be particularly difficult to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as the expected growth in transport volumes will outpace technological efficiency gains. Consequently, mobility governance will play a key role for implementing low-carbon societies.

In our talk we will present a set of empirical observations and case studies in order to underline the importance of mobility for everyday life and to illustrate existing strategies in mobility governance. Taking into account the specific geographical scope and context of these examples we will critically discuss the potential and the limitations of different strategies. Moreover, we will sketch out theoretical approaches that can help us better understand the complexity of mobility decisions and mobility governance.
